The first games which were later called “the Olympics” were held about a thousand years before our era. The ancient games tradition lasted for almost 1200 years from 776 B.C. until 393 A.D., when the Christian emperor of Rome,
Theodosius I, banned them, because the games were pagan!
The revival of the Olympic Games began in 1894, when a young French teacher, Pierre de Coubertin, made a public speech before the International Congress of 15 nations in Paris. In his speech he emphasized the importance of sports in uniting peoples of the world and serving the cause of peace, as in ancient times. The first Olympics of modern times were held in 1896 in Athens Greece.
