Last year I want to England with my parents. We stayed in Birmingham for a year, because my dad had a job at the University, I went to school in Birmingham and tins .s an article about my experience there.
In England you start school when you’re five and you go to primary school. When you’re eleven you go to a secondary school, either a comprehensive school or a grammar school. It’s very different from Russia, because there are not so many types of secondary schools.
We studied lots of interesting subjects. For example we did computer studies and chemistry with practical experiments in the laboratory. You can also study unusual subjects like photography and tourism.
When you are thirteen or fourteen you decide what subjects interest you most and start your preparation for GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education), these are examinations that you take when you are sixteen. You and your teachers decide which subjects you take. Most people take five subjects, for example maths, English, science, French, history and geography, but some people take eight or more.
In Britain you can leave school when you are sixteen. Many students stay at their secondary school and take A-levels (Advanced Levels) when they are eighteen before going to university. For A-levels you specialise in two or three subjects. You can study for A-levels at the same school or you can go to a sixth-form college.
I had a good time in Birmingham and I enjoyed my time at school. English kids were very nice and friendly and now I’ve got lots of friends to go and visit.
