1. Read the texts on pages 13 and 17 again. Compare the school systems in Russia and the UK and complete the diagram in your Workbook. Get ready to speak about it.

Russia and the UK have some similarities and some differences in their school systems.

• In both countries children go to school and study different subjects.
• In Britain children start school at the age of five and go to primary school first.
• At the age of eleven British children go to secondary school: a comprehensive school or a grammar school.
• In Russia there are not so many types of secondary schools.
• In Britain students study many subjects, including practical ones such as computer studies and chemistry.
• At the age of thirteen or fourteen British students choose the subjects they want to prepare for GCSEs.
• GCSEs are taken at sixteen.
• In Britain students can leave school at sixteen, but many stay on for A-levels until they are eighteen.
• For A-levels they specialise in two or three subjects.

Answer: In Britain children start school at five, go to primary school, then to secondary school at eleven. They study many subjects and choose the ones for GCSEs at thirteen or fourteen. GCSEs are taken at sixteen. Many students stay on for A-levels until eighteen. In Russia there are fewer types of secondary schools.
