Acid rain

• What acid rain is: polluted rain, snow, sleet or fog that contains acid.
• What causes it: toxic fumes from cars, factories and power stations.
• What effects it has: it pollutes water and soil, kills fish and plants, and damages buildings and objects.
• What governments are doing: they are trying to reduce air pollution; some industries use new technologies to make smoke less harmful.
• What we can do: use our cars less and use solar power to heat our homes.

Talk: Acid rain is polluted rain, snow, sleet or fog that contains acid. It is caused by toxic fumes from cars, factories and power stations. These fumes pollute the air, and then the pollution falls to the ground with rain. Acid rain harms lakes, rivers and seas, poisons soil, kills fish and plants, and damages buildings and objects. Governments are trying to reduce air pollution, and some industries are using new technologies to make smoke less harmful. We can help too by using our cars less and using solar power to heat our homes.
