In the 19th century, many children in my country worked because their families were poor and needed money. Boys often worked in factories, mines, or workshops. Some worked as newspaper sellers, messengers, or farm workers. Girls usually worked as maids, in textile factories, or helped at home and on farms.

Their lives were very hard. Children worked long hours for little money and often had no time for school or play. The work was dangerous and tiring, and many children became ill. Life was difficult, but for many families child labour was the only way to survive.
