In ancient Rome entertainment was also popular. One of the most famous forms was gladiator fights, which attracted large crowds.

In the Middle Ages religious and moral plays became common. They were often performed to teach people about religion and good behaviour.

During the Renaissance entertainment changed again. Travelling actors performed in different towns, and the first special theatres appeared. This was also the time of William Shakespeare, one of the greatest playwrights in the world.
