a) English theatres in the 16th century: English theatres in the 16th century were very different from modern theatres. They were open-air buildings, and the stage was in the middle of the yard. People stood around the stage, and only rich spectators could sit in galleries. Performances took place in the daytime.

b) The Globe Theatre of the 16th century: The Globe was one of the most famous theatres of Shakespeare’s time. It was built in London in 1599 by members of Shakespeare’s company. It was a wooden open-air theatre. Many of Shakespeare’s plays were first performed there. In 1613 the theatre burned down.

c) The last years of Shakespeare’s life: In the last years of his life Shakespeare lived in Stratford-upon-Avon. He returned there from London and spent his time with his family. He died in 1616.

d) The importance of Shakespeare’s works to us: Shakespeare’s works are important because they help us understand people, their feelings and problems. His plays and sonnets are still read and performed all over the world. They teach us about love, friendship, honour, jealousy and life itself.
