1. Past perfect часто используется в косвенной речи не только после глагола said, но и told, asked, shouted, explained, wondered, wanted (to know) и т. д.
I explained to Alice that I had never been to India.
She asked if John had read the book.
She wondered who had left the door open.
2. При переводе прямой речи в косвенную данные глаголы часто заменяют глагол said. Ср.:
James said: «I didn’t understand you.»
James explained he hadn’t understood me.
Polly said to Tom: «I am going to the buffet.»
Polly told Tom she was going to the buffet.
Greg said: «Have you bought tickets for the play?»
Greg wanted to know if I had bought tickets for the play.
5 Mrs Loveday can’t hear very well. She wants to know what these people said. Report their words for her and use the verb explain.
