Если глагол, который вводит прямую речь, используется в past simple, при переводе прямой речи в косвенную следует помнить о том, что необходимо производить определённые лексические изменения.

ago -before
these — those
yesterday — the day before
last night (week, year) — the previous night (week, year)
Sarah said: «I bought the tickets yesterday.»
Sarah said she had bought the tickets the day before.
Dr Gordon asked: «Did you live here last year?»
Dr Gordon wondered if I had lived there the previous year.
