The New Globe Theatre
In 1949, an American actor Sam Wanamaker came to London where he wanted to visit the famous Globe Theatre in which William Shakespeare had staged his plays. What he found was the place where (1) the theatre had stood once. Wanamaker was in shock and (2) decided to rebuild The Globe It took many years to collect enough money and even longer to find out what the theatre had looked like in the old days.
In June 1997, Queen Elizabeth II opened the International Shakespeare Globe Centre, a replica of Shakespeare’s theatre. Sadly, Sam Wanamaker (3) had died several years before the opening and wasn’t in the audience to see his dream finally come true.
