William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564. His father was a glove-maker, and his mother came from a farming family. Shakespeare went to a local grammar school, where he studied Latin and literature.
In 1582, he married Anne Hathaway. They had three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. Later, Shakespeare left his family and moved to London.
Shakespeare wrote 37 plays and 154 sonnets. His most famous plays are Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth. He became a successful playwright and also worked as an actor.
Shakespeare was one of the actors in the theatre company called the Lord Chamberlain’s Men. In 1599, they built the Globe Theatre. The original Globe was destroyed by fire, but a modern reconstruction now stands in London and is used for performances.
