Martin Rietze is a freelance photographer and volcano chaser. His job involves travelling to active volcanoes, waiting for eruptions and taking stunning photos of lava, ash and volcanic lightning. When the Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted in Iceland in 2010, he was already there and managed to take some of his most spectacular shots. He spent three sleepless nights in freezing temperatures, got very close to the lava flow and photographed lava fountains, while rocks the size of cars were flying around him.

His job is very risky, so he always takes precautions. He wears goggles and a gas mask to protect himself from poisonous gases, and gloves to protect his hands from fresh lava. He also knows when it is safe to come near a volcano and when it is better to stay far away, sometimes many kilometres away.
