The writer has set the scene by describing the time, weather, place and her feelings: it was one Friday afternoon last winter, the weather was cold and rainy, and she was travelling home on the bus.
The writer refers to sight, hearing and touch. For example: the rain was pounding heavily against the windows, I could hear the sound of sirens, My head was throbbing.
The climax event is when the driver slammed on the brakes, the bus skidded, spun around and veered off the road.
The writer uses adjectives and adverbs such as cold, heavily, terribly, suddenly, extremely, seriously, fortunately.
The time words and phrases are: One Friday afternoon, last winter, once, when, only about five minutes away, soon after that, finally.
