1. The party was a success — everybody had come on time, had brought good presents and had been in a good mood.

2. Everybody enjoyed the trip — they had planned it well, had chosen a nice place and had had a lot of fun there.

3. He had a lot of problems at school — he had missed many lessons and had not done his homework regularly.

4. The earthquake did a lot of damage to the city — it had been very strong and had destroyed many buildings.

5. His parents were proud of him — he had worked hard and had passed all his exams successfully.
