Before I read the story about the six Robinsons I had heard a similar story. It was about two old people, a husband and a wife, who just wanted to rest on their boat. As soon as they had started their sea trip, a violent wind blew them away from the coast. They spent about two weeks in the open sea before they noticed a tourist ship. By that time they had drunk all the fresh water they had with them. They were glad to be saved at last.

Разбор: в первом предложении нужен Past Perfect, потому что действие произошло раньше другого прошлого действия. После as soon as и в последовательности прошедших событий употребляется Past Simple. Для действия, завершившегося до другого момента в прошлом, снова используется Past Perfect.
