One of the traditional family holidays in Russia is Maslenitsa.

It is celebrated in late February or early March, before Lent. Usually relatives and friends are invited for the holiday. The traditional food for Maslenitsa is blini — thin pancakes with butter, sour cream, jam or honey.

People do not usually give expensive presents on this day, but they may give small souvenirs, sweets or homemade gifts. During the holiday people usually visit each other, eat pancakes, sing songs, dance, play games and go for a walk.
