1. Why have many species of birds and animals disappeared? Millions of animals and birds die every year because people have polluted their natural habitats.
2. What pollutes the air? The air is polluted by power stations, factories and car fumes.
3. Are the rivers polluted? Yes, they are. Some of them are empty of fish now, and in some rivers you can even see thick foam caused by chemical waste.
4. Why are forests disappearing all over the world? People cut down trees because they need wood and paper or new places for farms and houses. Forests the size of Belgium are destroyed every year. Even if new trees are planted, it takes many years for them to grow.
5. Can you see pollution near the seaside? Go to the seaside and you will see pollution around you. There is a lot of litter on the beaches. Some of it was left by people and some was brought by the water.
6. People are in danger, aren’t they? Yes, they are. Pollution is very dangerous for people, and it is one of the most serious environmental problems in the world.
7. What are the most serious environmental problems today? The most serious environmental problems are air, river and sea pollution, cutting down forests, litter and waste.
8. What have you learnt from the text? If we do not stop using our planet the way we are doing now, it will die very soon.
