Being independent means making your own choices, taking responsibility for your decisions, and looking after yourself.

I think it is important to choose your own friends and books, because these things help you develop your own personality. It is also important to take serious decisions by yourself, for example about smoking or doing sports, because such choices can affect your health and future.

Being independent also means taking care of your pets and your room. If you can do that, it shows that you are responsible. Earning pocket money is another part of independence, because it teaches you how to work for the things you want.

In my opinion, independence is a useful quality. It helps a person become more confident and mature.
