Say what people use direct and reported speech for Direct speech She says: “I phone my friends every day.” She says: “I will phone you tomorrow.” She says: “I phoned you an hour ago.” Reported speech She says (that) she phones her friends every day. She says (that) she’ll phone me tomorrow. Direct speech is used to repeat the exact words of a person. Reported speech is used to tell what someone said without quoting the exact words.

In direct speech, the speaker’s words are given in quotation marks:

She says: “I phone my friends every day.”
She says: “I will phone you tomorrow.”
She says: “I phoned you an hour ago.”

In reported speech, the words are changed to fit the new sentence:

She says (that) she phones her friends every day.
She says (that) she’ll phone me tomorrow.
She says (that) she phoned me an hour ago.
