Direct speech is used to repeat the exact words of a person. Reported speech is used to tell what someone said without quoting the exact words.
In direct speech, the speaker’s words are given in quotation marks:
She says: “I phone my friends every day.”
She says: “I will phone you tomorrow.”
She says: “I phoned you an hour ago.”
In reported speech, the words are changed to fit the new sentence:
She says (that) she phones her friends every day.
She says (that) she’ll phone me tomorrow.
She says (that) she phoned me an hour ago.
