Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin is known as Russia’s greatest poet. At a time when most great literature was written in French or English, Pushkin wrote in Russian. He wrote poems, love poems, political poems, short stories, novels, plays and fairy tales.
Pushkin was born on May 26, 1799, in Moscow, Russia. His parents were aristocrats, but his great-grandfather on his mother’s side, Abraham Hannibal, was an African slave. After leaving school, Pushkin lived in St Petersburg and, like all young aristocrats, had a job at the Tsar’s court. The job did not pay enough money, so he started to write, and soon his books were published. In fact, Pushkin was probably the first professional Russian writer.
When he was almost 30 years old, Pushkin married Natalya Goncharova, who was a very beautiful woman. Pushkin loved his wife, but she did not love him. It was because of her that Pushkin was finally killed in a duel on January 29, 1837.
One of his most popular novels is Dubrovsky. A young aristocrat is left with nowhere to live, and his property is taken by his father’s friend, Troekurov. Dubrovsky becomes a robber. He takes money from the rich and gives it to the poor. His dream is to rob Troekurov and burn his house.
But one day Dubrovsky meets Masha, Troekurov’s daughter. He falls in love with her and forgets his plan. Masha falls in love with Dubrovsky too, but in the end her father makes her marry another man who is old but rich. Dubrovsky comes to help her, but he is too late.
