Elmer’s War

On his fourteenth birthday, Elmer lived in the castle of his uncle, Lord Thorkill of Arden. Four years earlier, Norman soldiers had killed Elmer’s family. The only thing that reminded him of his past was a golden ring that he had found in the forest.

Lord Thorkill wanted Elmer to meet some rich Normans, but Elmer did not like them. He was especially worried about his best friend Sigurd, who was a slave and was often beaten by the cook. Elmer and Sigurd decided to run away and join Hereward, an English leader who was fighting against King William and the Normans.

The boys travelled to the Island of Ely. There they joined Hereward’s people and learned to fight. When the Normans built a bridge across the fens, Hereward and his men secretly helped them. They built the bridge badly and made a tower at its end. Then Elmer saw the Norman soldiers approaching and understood that the witch on the tower was only a trick. He ordered his friends to burn the bridge, and the Norman army fell into the water.

Later, the monks betrayed Hereward and led the Norman soldiers to his camp. Many Englishmen were killed or taken prisoner. Elmer and Sigurd escaped with Hereward. Hereward told Elmer that his uncle had secretly helped the English rebels and that Elmer would inherit all his land and money. After that, Hereward disappeared, but people believed that he had become a legend.
