TIPS FOR WRITING ABOUT RUSSIAN WILDLIFE IN ENGLISH • Use the Russian-English dictionary to find the English equivalents for the names of creatures. • If you cannot find an equivalent for the Russian name of a creature, use the Russian word for it. • If you use the Russian name of a creature, do it following English grammar, e.g. the plural for taimen (kind of fish — таймень), will be taimens. • If you want your English-speaking partners to understand you well, describe in detail what it is and compare it to other creatures.

Lake Baikal Wildlife

Lake Baikal is home to many interesting creatures. One of them is the Baikal seal. It is a small freshwater seal that lives only in Lake Baikal. It has a round body, short flippers and thick fur to keep warm in cold water.

Another unusual creature is the omul. It is a kind of fish. Omuls are silver and rather small. They live in deep, clean water and are very important for the lake ecosystem.

You can also find the Baikal goby there. It is a tiny fish with a long body and big eyes. It lives near the bottom of the lake and feeds on small water animals.
