Here is Beth’s composition about her hometown Manchester. 1) What things and aspects of Iife in Manchester does Beth describe? MY HOMETOWN My hometown is Manchester. Manchester is situated in the north-west of England in the county of Greater Manchester. It is the second largest city with a population of more than 400,000 people. Though Manchester is not as large as London, it has got many good aspects of a modem city. We’ve got a lot of theatres, art galleries, concert halls and museums, for example the City Art Gallery and the Museum of Science and industry and others. We are proud of our airport which is the third busiest airport in the UK. With it it is very easy to travel to and from Manchester and through the countryside. And our tram system Metrolink, which runs through city streets, is clean, guick and guiet. There are a lot of things to do. Visitors can, for example, visit famous places, walk, in the parks, enjoy shopping or listen to our traditional music and watch folk dances.4ur G-Mex Centre is a popular place. However, it was built from an old railway station. Different exhibitions, concerts and sporting events are organised there. In our Chinatown* there are many cafes and small shops. There is also a Iurge mall* and some big shops and markets with traditional food and nice goods. Sports, especially football and rugby, are very popular in our city. Manchester has got some sports clubs. People like playing or watching sports here. Manchester United, the world’s most famous football club, has a lot of fans here. In my city there are a lot of monuments to famous people, for example, Alan Turing,* Abraham Lincoln* and Queen Victoria.* We are very proud that great scientists and Nobel Prize* winners such as joule,* Rutherford,* Geim* and Novoselov* worked in Manchester.
