Look through the letter placed in the Problem Shared column in the teenage magazine Shout. The letter is addressed to Cathy, who helps young readers to solve their problems. How would you solve the girl’s problem if you were Cathy?
Write a 100-120-word letter to reply to the girl through the magazine.
Cathy, my friend’s family doesn’t have any money and her mum gets all her stuff from charity shops. She’s so embarrassed and upset about it and although I feel sorry for her I don’t know how I can help. Please tell me what l can do.

I’m sorry your friend feels embarrassed, but she should remember that many people buy clothes and other things in charity shops. There is nothing wrong with that. The most important thing is that her family is doing its best.

You can help her by being kind and supportive. Tell her that money does not make a person better or worse. Try to make her feel proud of her family, not ashamed. You can also invite her to spend time with you and your friends so she feels more confident.

If she is upset, encourage her to talk to her mum. I’m sure her mum will explain everything and help her feel better.
