- 2. Reading aloud. You are going to read aloud the text about what the fashion industry names the “athleisure” trend. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud.
Jeans long have been very popular in the USA. After all, not many pieces of clothing are so comfortable. They can be worn daily yet good enough to be dressed up or down. But sales of the iconic blue jeans fell 6 per cent during the past year. Jeans business has been hurt by what the fashion industry names the “athleisure” trend. People more often are wearing yoga pants and leggings instead of traditional denim. “Everyone wants to look like they are running to the gym, even if they are not.” The “athleisure” trend is the biggest threat which jeans have faced. It reflects a fundamental lifestyle change. Fashion watchers say that this decline could be the longest. To be sure, the jeans business is not dead. Denim accounts for 20 per cent of annual sales at the nation’s department stores.
- 2. Choose one of the two topics below.
1) This is what Irene Slatter writes about the way people dress in Russia in her Simple Guide to Russia:
“… if you travel to Russia in winter, you should take a warm coat, boots and a fur hat with ear protection. For the other seasons, take the clothes you would normally expect to wear at these times in Western Europe …”
Comment on the author’s opinion. Don’t forget to say a few words about clothes “for the other seasons”. You have to talk for 2 minutes. The teacher will listen to you until you have finished. Then he/she will ask you some questions.
- 3. Oral report.
Some years ago in the UK the UNICEF organised the non-uniform day. The day was organised in the following way: children had to pay a small fee to wear a “normal” piece of clothing to school instead of one piece of their school uniform. The money raised went towards helping children in countries such as Brazil and Bangladesh. Four thousand students joined the project.
Remember (Don’t forget) to say:
- what you think of the idea;
- what pieces of clothing you would swap and why;
- what you would spend the raised money on if your school took part in the non-uniform day.
You have to talk continuously. You have to talk for 2 minutes. The teacher will listen to you until you have finished. Then he/she will ask you some questions. Answer the questions.
Dear friend,
I’m sorry to hear about your problem. First of all, you should remember that clothes from charity shops are nothing to be ashamed of. Many people buy things there, and it does not mean that they are poor or less important.
You can help your friend by being kind and supportive. Talk to her and tell her that she should be proud of herself, not embarrassed by her clothes. If other people make rude comments, ignore them and stay confident. Real friends care about each other, not about expensive things.
Try to spend time together doing things that do not cost money. Your friendship is much more important than clothes.
Best wishes,
Cathy
