1. Grammar
Once I entered an athletics competition which consisted of three different events — running, jumping and throwing. There were 17 other people in the competition. I came third so I got a bronze award. I felt extremely proud of myself when I won the award. Before the competition I was practicing every day. I am training really hard for the running event. Now I am training for the next competition. I hope to get gold!
2. Vocabulary
Netball is my favourite sport. I play netball for my school. The first game of netball was played in the UK in 1895. Netball has a few similarities to basketball. That’s because it started off as a women’s version of basketball in America. The really big difference between netball and basketball is that you can’t dribble with the ball. A netball court is divided into three sections with seven players in each team. You can’t throw the ball the whole length of the court, it has to be passed through every section. Netball is a non-contact sport and the defenders have to be 0.9 metres away from the player with the ball. To keep the game really fast, if you’ve caught the ball, you only have three seconds to pass it on again. Netball was recognized as an Olympic sport in 1995. Although it’s traditionally been a girls’ sport, some boys are now playing it too. I like playing netball because I get to keep fit by doing something that I enjoy. Boys have their sports like rugby and football, although some girls play those games too. But for me netball is a proper girls’ sport.
