These words go under the following categories:

• continents: Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, Antarctica, North America, South America
• countries: Russia, France, China, Canada, Brazil, India, Japan
• cities: London, Paris, Moscow, New York, Rome, Tokyo
• rivers: the Thames, the Volga, the Nile, the Amazon, the Mississippi
• mountains: the Alps, the Urals, the Himalayas, the Rockies
• oceans: the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Arctic Ocean
• seas: the Black Sea, the Baltic Sea, the Mediterranean Sea
• lakes: Lake Baikal, Lake Ontario, Lake Victoria

We use the with names of rivers, seas, oceans, mountain ranges, and some groups of islands. We do not use the with names of continents, countries, cities, and lakes.
