Naomi: Well, I try not to eat too much meat. I used to eat a lot of hamburgers and hot dogs, but I’m trying not to eat red meat any more because I think it’s very unhealthy to eat too much of it. Beef’s got a lot of cholesterol and hormones and things in it. But I do enjoy chicken — I cook it two or three times a week. And I eat a lot of fish, too.
2
Rob: Yeah, I eat meat. A lot, actually. I love steaks and burgers. I can’t imagine life without meat, especially beef. Some of my friends at college are vegetarian and, to be honest, l don’t understand them. They sometimes cook me vegetarian food and I’m always hungry after the meal! It’s natural to eat meat and our brains and our bodies need it … and of course it’s really delicious, too.
3
Will: I became a vegetarian about five years ago when I was fifteen. I saw a television documentary about how they killed animals and it really shocked me. It was so cruel. And last year I became a vegan, That means I still don’t eat any meat, but now I don’t eat or use any animal products. No fish, no eggs, nothing with milk in it like cheese or yoghurt. I even don’t wear anything that came from animals … no leather shoes or jackets. It’s quite hard, but a lot of supermarkets in Britain now have vegan food, things like soya milk, so it’s not impossible.
4
Sue: When I was at university, I became interested in Buddhism. Because of that I had to stop eating meat. My family weren’t very happy about it Every time I was ill they said to me, ’Oh, Sue! It’s because you don’t eat any meat!’ I have to say it was quite difficult. The problem was that before l became a Buddhist I did really like meat. I used to love bacon and ham sandwiches and things like that. Sometimes when I’m in the supermarket I almost think about buying some pork or chicken. But I don’t.
