Most people think that natural fabrics are better for the environment than synthetic ones, but this isn’t always true. For example, it takes just one pound of cotton to make one T-shirt, but it takes one third of a pound of pesticides to grow the cotton in the first place. Cotton may also be treated with all sorts of chemicals to change its colour. Unfortunately, all these chemicals are disposed of as waste, which pollutes our rivers and soil.
So, what’s the solution? Well, when it comes to buying new clothes these days, you don’t need to worry, as you can simply buy something organic! This means buying clothes that are produced in a way that does as little harm to the environment as possible. Here are some of the different options available.
Bamboo clothing is as soft as cashmere and allows the skin to breathe. It’s also cool in hot weather and warm in cold weather. Eco fleece is a kind of polyester made from recycled plastic bottles. At the recycling centre, the plastic is washed, chopped up and turned into flakes, which are then melted, made into fibres and woven into cosy jumpers.
Linen grows more quickly than cotton and needs fewer chemicals to produce. Being environmentally fashionable doesn’t take much effort, so why not give it a try!
