Задача

Приведем выдержку из задания из учебника Баранова, Афанасьева, Михеева 9 класс, Дрофа: 12 Answer the questions on the topic «Being a Teenager».
1. What is it like being a teen? Why do many teens say that it is a stressful period of their life? How can you explain the fact that teenagers often try to rebel? In what way do teenagers usually behave during their teen years? What problems do teens usually face at this time?
2. Being a teenager is the time when most boys and girls make decisions about their future careers. Do you think it is the right time to do it? Don’t you think that people should have a gap year before taking a final decision? Do you think it should be only their own decision? Is it more sensible, in your view, to turn to adults for advice? What other difficult decisions do teenagers have to make?
3. What are teens’ popular ways of “hanging out”? Do you think modern young people prefer to communicate online or to be in each other’s company? Is loneliness a significant teens’ problem of our time?
4. What are teens’ usual hobbies and interests? What kinds of films do they prefer to watch? What books do they read (if any at all)? Don’t you think the habit of reading is the one that modern teens lack? What other sources of information do teenagers usually use? Which of them, in your view, are preferable?
5. Do you think teens should have pocket money? In what way should they get it? What’s your opinion about teens’ work? Is it appropriate for schoolchildren to get a job? What jobs do you think are most suitable for teens? What do teenagers usually spend their money on?
6. What do you think of a generation gap? Do many young people have problems with adults, their parents in particular? What is the place of a family in young people’s lives? How important are friends for them? Have you ever heard the word “framily”? Can you guess what it means? (If not, here’s the explanation given in the online dictionary saying that framily is when friends become like family, they’re family, closer than close, they may know you better than your own family.) Why do you think this word has recently appeared in the language?
7. What are pros and cons of being a teenager in your opinion?

1. Being a teenager is both exciting and stressful. Teenagers often feel pressure because they have to study hard, make new friends, understand themselves and deal with changes in their bodies and emotions. Many teens rebel because they want to be independent and show that they are not children anymore. Usually teenagers are emotional, energetic, curious and sometimes unpredictable. The main problems they face are conflicts with parents, school stress, peer pressure, self-doubt and the search for their own identity.

2. I think it is a good time to start thinking about a future career, but not to make a final decision too early. A gap year can be useful because it gives a person time to understand what he or she really wants. In my opinion, the decision should be mainly the teenager’s own, but advice from adults is also important. Teenagers also have to make other difficult decisions, for example, about friends, hobbies, exams and how to spend their free time.

3. Teenagers usually hang out with friends, go to cafés, parks, cinemas, shopping centres or sports grounds. Modern young people often prefer to communicate online, but many of them still enjoy meeting in person. Loneliness is a serious problem today because some teens spend too much time on the Internet and have fewer real-life contacts.

4. Teens are usually interested in music, sports, games, fashion, social media and different clubs. They often prefer action films, comedies, fantasy or adventure films. Some of them read books, but many read less than before. Yes, I think the habit of reading is becoming weaker among modern teens. Besides books, teenagers usually get information from the Internet, TV, blogs and social networks. In my view, books and reliable websites are the best sources of information.

5. Yes, I think teens should have pocket money. They can get it from their parents for helping at home or for doing small chores. In my opinion, schoolchildren can have a part-time job if it does not harm their studies. Suitable jobs for teens are babysitting, helping in shops, tutoring younger children, delivering newspapers or working in cafés. Teenagers usually spend their money on clothes, food, entertainment, gadgets and gifts.

6. I think a generation gap is natural, because people of different ages often have different views and habits. Yes, many young people have problems with adults, especially with their parents, because they want more freedom. Family is very important in young people’s lives because it gives support, love and security. Friends are also very important because teenagers need communication and understanding. “Framily” means friends who become like family. This word has appeared recently because friendship has become especially important in modern life, and many people feel that close friends are almost as important as relatives.

7. The pros of being a teenager are energy, freedom, new experiences, friendship and the chance to discover yourself. The cons are stress, school pressure, misunderstandings with adults, lack of confidence and many important decisions to make. In my opinion, being a teenager is difficult, but it is also an interesting and important period of life.
