Television can influence family life in both good and bad ways. On the one hand, it can bring family members together when they watch programmes or films in the evening. On the other hand, it often distracts people from talking to each other. Children may pay more attention to the TV than to their parents, so adults sometimes have to compete with the television for their attention. The quotation shows that the TV can become so important in a family that it interferes with communication.
