Space exploration began long before the first space flights. For many centuries people observed the stars and the planets, invented telescopes and dreamed of travelling beyond the Earth. Scientists studied the Moon and other celestial bodies and tried to understand how the Universe works.

The first real step into space was made with unmanned flights. In 1957 the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite. After that many automatic spacecraft and probes were sent into space to explore the Moon, Venus, Mars and other planets.

Then came manned flights into space. In 1961 Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space. Later astronauts and cosmonauts made longer flights, worked on space stations and even landed on the Moon.

Space exploration has always included both competition and cooperation. At first the USSR and the USA competed with each other in the space race. Later countries began to cooperate more closely. Today international projects, such as the International Space Station, show that space exploration is a common task for many nations.
