Space exploration began with the first manned flight in 1961, when the Soviet spaceship Vostok 1 carried Yuri Gagarin into orbit. He became the first person to orbit the Earth. This was the beginning of the space race between the Soviet Union and the USA.

In 1963, Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space on board Vostok 6. In 1965, Alexei Leonov made the first space walk after leaving the spaceship Voskhod 2. These Soviet cosmonauts became famous all over the world.

The USA also made great progress. In 1968, Apollo 8 became the first manned flight to orbit the Moon. In 1969, Apollo 11 made the first manned Moon landing. Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin walked on the Moon.

Later, space exploration became an area of cooperation. In 1975, the Soviet and American crews worked together during the Soyuz 19 and Apollo 18 mission. In 2000, Russia, the USA and some countries of Europe and Asia continued to cooperate and launched spaceships to explore the Earth and other planets.
