THE BUSINESS METING
You never can tell when opportunity will knock on your door. One day, Maggie 1) was sitting in the lounge area of a 5-star hotel waiting for a client. Suddenly, she 2) spotted a really famous businessman a few tables away. She couldn’t believe her eyes! When she 3) got over her shock, she suddenly had a brainwave and decided to go over and introduce herself. ‘Hi, I’m Maggie O’Brian,» she said confidently to the amazingly successful businessman. ‘Ermm … excuse me, but I’m about to close the 4) most important business deal of my life. It 5) would help me if I could look important. Please could you come over and say hi when my client 6) arrives?” «Sure!” the businessman replied, to Maggie’s surprise. So, a few minutes after Maggie’s client arrived, the businessman approached them and said «Maggie! I 7) haven’t heard from you for ages! Where no man has come before
Satellite navigation systems (or satnavs) that help to guide us to our destinations while driving don’t work in space. The 1) distance from the satellites, orbiting a tiny planet called Earth, are 2) simply too great. However, scientists now think they may have worked out how to get around this problem by using a similar system to the one that 3) sailors used to steer by using the stars and moon.
A pulsar is a star that has reached the end of its life. Its end is marked by a 4) massive explosion that destroys most of it. What is left behind spins very fast and produces a beam of x-ray light. The new system would calculate the 5) arrival times of the light from pulses on board a spacecraft in order to locate its position. This would work everywhere in the solar system, and even further. Our descendants won’t have to worry about 6) be accurate GPS for space travel.
