Listening

Speaking

1. a) Read the rubric and find the key words. How many parts are there in the task? What does each part involve? Imagine that the council wants to improve life in the neighbourhood. Look at each of the problems (1–7) and talk to each other about why each is a problem. Then decide which two problems the council should try to solve first.
2. b) In pairs, do the task. Use the language in the box below and the Key vocabulary above to help you.

1a) In the pictures you can see:

1b) It really annoys me when I see cars parked on pavements. I also get really annoyed by noisy construction work and graffiti and litter.

A — The speaker complains about how bad his/her area has become.
B — The speaker talks about his/her new place of residence.

D — The speaker describes the problems the neighbourhood once had.

3a) The task has two parts: first, discuss why each problem is a problem for the community; second, decide which two problems the council should solve first.

A: Firstly, I think cars parked on pavements are a problem for a community. Not only do they look bad, but they also damage the pavements and make it dangerous for pedestrians because people have to walk on the road.
B: I totally agree. A dripping tap is a problem at home that a plumber can fix, so I don’t think it is a serious community problem. However, noisy construction work is very annoying and it makes people irritable.
A: I totally agree with you. Stray animals are a serious problem. They make a mess in the parks and can make areas unsafe.
B: Yes, I see what you mean. Graffiti and litter are a problem for a community because they make places look unattractive and people stop caring for them.
A: I totally agree with you. These places can become rundown and abandoned because no one wants to live there.
B: That’s true. Similarly, overgrown gardens make areas look rundown too.
A: What about overcrowded public transport?
B: One of the problems with this is that it encourages pickpockets.
A: Yes, I see what you mean. It puts people off using public transport and leads to more cars on the roads, which causes traffic jams and air pollution.
B: Yes, I agree. I think the council should solve graffiti and litter first.
A: I agree. The cars parked on pavements should be the second problem they solve because then the streets will be easier to clean and safer for people.
