Vitus Jonassen Bering was a famous traveller and explorer. He was born in 1681 in Denmark. In 1703 he joined the Russian navy. Later he took part in many expeditions to the east of Russia.

In 1725 Bering led the First Kamchatka Expedition. He sailed from St Petersburg to Kamchatka and explored the coast of Siberia. In 1728 he discovered the strait between Asia and America, which was later named after him.

In 1733 he started the Second Kamchatka Expedition. It was a very difficult journey, but Bering and his team continued their work. In 1741 he reached Alaska and explored the Aleutian Islands.

Bering died in 1741 on one of the islands in the Pacific Ocean. He made a great contribution to geography and became one of the most famous explorers in history.
