Can a person be punished for his politeness and good manners? Sometimes he can. At least I nearly got into serious trouble for this.

Once I was traveling to Rome for the weekend. I had very little luggage and was happily looking forward to a nice and relaxing journey. I was just coming up to the customs desk when I saw a woman with a small child in her arms. She looked tired and worried, so I decided to help her. I smiled at her and said, “May I help you?”

She thanked me and asked me to carry her bag for a moment while she filled in some papers. I agreed and took the bag. Then a customs officer came up to me and asked what was in it. I explained that I was only helping the woman. But he looked suspicious and told me to open the bag.

To my surprise, the bag was full of cigarettes and expensive things. The woman had disappeared. The officer thought I was trying to smuggle the things through customs. I was very nervous and had to answer many questions before they finally believed me.

In the end, everything was cleared up, but I learned a lesson: sometimes even good manners can lead to trouble.
