The ideas of taking up sport and participating in an international competition seem to me the most realistic. Young people can also travel more cheaply in the following ways:

• Apply for an International Student Identity Card (ISIC). It provides discounts on sightseeing in 103 countries and includes an insurance plan, a mobile phone service and an emergency helpline.
• Take part in volunteer work. You may be selected for a student charity programme and travel at the weekend or for a longer period while raising money for charity.
• Apply for travel grants. You may receive a grant to travel in your own country or abroad to attend scientific conferences and seminars, take part in internships, or work in archives and libraries.
