When I read these unofficial names, I think of the main natural features and climate of the states.
- Alaska — The Last Frontier: a very large, cold and sparsely populated state in the north-west of the USA.
- California — The Golden State: famous for its sunny weather, gold rush history and rich economy.
- Florida — The Sunshine State: it has a warm climate and a lot of sunny days.
- Hawaii — The Aloha State: a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean, known for its tropical nature and friendly atmosphere.
- Texas — The Lone Star State: it is large and has a strong sense of independence.
- Colorado — The Centennial State: located in the Rocky Mountains, with a varied relief and high mountains.
The relief and geographical position of these states reflect their nicknames: for example, Alaska is remote and wild, Florida is sunny and warm, Hawaii is tropical and island-like, and Colorado is mountainous.
