The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
The coat of arms of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a combination of symbols representing the four parts of the country: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It was introduced after the union with Scotland in 1603.
The shield is divided into four parts. It includes the coat of arms of England, with three lions on a red background; the coat of arms of Scotland, with a red lion on a yellow background; and the coat of arms of Northern Ireland, with a yellow harp on a blue background. The two English lions symbolise England’s leading role in the union.
The shield is supported by two mythical animals: the English lion and the Scottish unicorn. A crowned lion, symbolising power and strength, is above the coat of arms. At the bottom there are floral symbols of the four parts of the country.
The coat of arms reflects the spirit of the nation and the relations between its parts. The lion has the leading role among the animals, representing England, the largest historical part of the country. Scotland has never been controlled by England, which is why the Scottish unicorn occupies one of the leading positions on the coat of arms. Wales was under English control from 1300, so the Welsh dragon is not shown on the shield. We can see only the floral symbol of Wales, the leek.
The United States of America
The symbol of the country is a bald eagle with outspread wings on a white background. Five thousand years ago, Native Americans chose the eagle as an emblem to symbolise their power. The bald eagle got its name from the early American colonists, but it is not really bald: its head is white. This bird lives only in the USA and Canada.
In 1782, Congress chose the bald eagle as the emblem of the newly formed state to show the courage and power of the nation.
The Russian Federation
The State Coat of Arms of Russia is a golden double-headed eagle with a rider, Saint George, on a shield on the eagle’s chest. A historical crown is above the eagle’s two heads.
The first coat of arms with a double-headed eagle was introduced in 1480 by Prince Ivan III. It appeared during the formation of the Russian state and symbolised the supreme power and sovereignty of the country. Since then, the double-headed eagle has been the main part of the coat of arms.
Today, the crown symbolises the sovereignty of the Russian Federation as a whole and of its constituent parts. The State Coat of Arms shows our patron saint, Saint George, who helped our country during the war. The State Coat of Arms appeared in Russia in 1480. It is one of the oldest national emblems and contributes to the traditions of our country.
