Sightseeing: What do you actually see? I live in Ipswich. It’s a typical English city, very quiet and very traditional. When I go out in the morning, I say hello to all my neighbours, and very often we discuss our plans for the day with each other. Once I was on my way to the train station when I met one of my neighbours. «Where are you going?» an old lady asked. «I’m going to London.» I answered. «Well», she said, «if you meet one Englishman there, give him my warmest regards.» I didn’t get her joke until I came to London. Then I realized that wherever I looked, I saw crowds of tourists. Although I was a tourist myself, I found other tourists very noisy and irritating. Then I started to think about it. Most of us have been tourists at least once in our life. What is more important to you: to see as many sights as possible or to enjoy yourself? Do you want to impress your friends with your pictures and stories or do you prefer to get impressions of new places? There are tourists who will not sleep well unless they have visited all the sights that are listed in the booklets. They take hundreds of pictures of everything they see. .Sometimes I think that it’s more important to them to make a picture of a place than to learn about it. Some people however have a different approach to sightseeing. They do not put a task before them to do as much as they can. They choose a thing or two and devote a lot of time to it. For example, when they visit a picture gallery, they do not try to fit a maximum number of pictures into their visit but spend their time on one artist or even one picture. I had a guest from America many years ago. She destroyed some of the stereotypes of American tourists I had. She came to Moscow for a fortnight. Before visiting Moscow she spent a fortnight in St Petersburg and was already tired. I described some ideas of where we should go and what we should see. but she told me right away: «I am here to enjoy myself, and not to exhaust myself to death. And I am already tired.» She woke up at twelve, had a shower and a substantial breakfast. Then we chose a place or two to visit. We never visited more than two places of interest in one day. On the way to a sight we had long interesting conversations. She asked a lot and she talked a lot, too. I am not a good guide as I have a poor sense of direction and a bad memory for events. We got lost regularly, but it didn’t matter. Everything was fun to her, even getting lost: these were interesting situations. After a while I needed to go to the countryside where my parents were staying. I was really surprised that she wanted to join me. «I’ve done enough. Now I am going to sunbathe and swim. After all, I’m on holiday.»

Я живу в Ипсвиче. Это типичный английский город, очень тихий и очень традиционный. Когда я выхожу утром, я здороваюсь со всеми соседями, и очень часто мы обсуждаем друг с другом наши планы на день.

Хотите ли вы произвести впечатление на друзей своими фотографиями и рассказами или предпочитаете получать впечатления от новых мест?

Есть туристы, которые не смогут спокойно спать, пока не посетят все достопримечательности, перечисленные в путеводителях. Они делают сотни фотографий всего, что видят. Иногда мне кажется, что для них важнее сфотографировать место, чем узнать о нём что-то.

Однако у некоторых людей другой подход к осмотру достопримечательностей. Они не ставят перед собой задачу сделать как можно больше. Они выбирают одно или два места и посвящают им много времени. Например, когда они посещают картинную галерею, они не стараются уместить в визит как можно больше картин, а проводят время за одним художником или даже одной картиной.

Много лет назад у меня была гостья из Америки. Она разрушила некоторые стереотипы об американских туристах, которые у меня были. Она приехала в Москву на две недели. Перед поездкой в Москву она провела две недели в Санкт-Петербурге и уже устала. Я описал ей несколько мест, куда мы могли бы пойти и что посмотреть, но она сразу сказала: «Я здесь, чтобы получать удовольствие, а не изнурять себя до смерти. И я уже устала».

Она просыпалась в двенадцать, принимала душ и плотно завтракала. Потом мы выбирали одно или два места для посещения. За один день мы никогда не посещали больше двух достопримечательностей. По дороге к ним мы долго и интересно разговаривали. Она много спрашивала и тоже много говорила. Я не очень хороший гид, потому что у меня плохое чувство направления и плохая память на события. Мы регулярно терялись, но это не имело значения. Ей всё было в радость, даже то, что мы заблудились: это были интересные ситуации.

Через некоторое время мне нужно было поехать в деревню, где жили мои родители. Я был очень удивлён, что она захотела поехать со мной. «Я уже достаточно посмотрела. Теперь я собираюсь загорать и плавать. В конце концов, я на отдыхе».
