Nurse: Hello, children. Our guests today are Dr John Small, Bernard Foam, a fitness instructor, and Deborah Bulmer, a government health adviser.
Ms Bulmer: According to statistics, many American children are overweight. American children eat too much fast food and spend too much time watching television. The government is worried because being overweight can lead to health problems.
Nurse: What should we do? Let’s ask Dr Small.
Dr Small: A balanced diet is very important. Teenagers should eat at least four portions of fruit and four portions of vegetables every day. Fats and meat are also important parts of your diet, but too much meat and fat are not good for you. Fast food and convenience food are a problem, too. They contain a lot of fat but have little nutritional value. When I was a child, we didn’t have convenience food.
Nurse: But what about children who want to lose weight?
Dr Small: You lose weight when you burn more calories than you consume. Diets can be dangerous, so I recommend eating properly and exercising a lot.
Bernard Foam: I agree with the doctor. Physical activity is good for your health. Everyone should exercise three times a week. If you want to lose some weight, I recommend swimming and running. These activities burn a lot of calories. I also have some advice for the government health adviser. Twenty years ago, American children didn’t spend so much time watching television, but today children don’t play outside. I think the government should spend money on new sports clubs for children.
Ms Bulmer: I completely agree with you. We should do everything possible to teach children about a balanced diet and open free sports clubs. This will give children the opportunity to grow up healthy and strong.
