Rob: Yes, please. I’d like a pair of trainers.
Shop assistant: What would you prefer?
Rob: Do you have anything by Nike?
Shop assistant: Of course. What colour would you like?
Rob: White, please.
Shop assistant: And what size are you?
Rob: Six and a half.
Shop assistant: Here you are.
Emily: They look great, Rob. Try them on!
Shop assistant: How do they feel?
Rob: Terrible! They’re much too small.
Shop assistant: But they’re your size.
Rob: What’s wrong with my feet? Have they grown in a week?
Emily: Don’t panic, Rob. I know what it is.
Rob: What are you laughing at? My feet! They’ve grown! What’s wrong with me?
Emily: Oh, stop it. You’ve just tried on the wrong size. American and British sizes are different. Let me think… If your British size is six and a half, your American size is eight.
Rob: Thanks, Emily. What about clothes?
Emily: It’s the same with men’s and women’s clothes. When I came to Britain, I had the same problem as you. My American clothing size is six, but everything in size six was too small for me. I was really upset until someone told me about the difference in sizes.
