Answer
The first manager couldn’t insure the man’s life because his parents had both died very young, so the company thought the man might have a bad family health history.
Reported speech
The young man went into an insurance office because he wanted to get some life insurance. The manager of the company said that they would have to ask him a couple of questions. The young man answered that was OK and that he was happy to answer their questions.
The manager asked if his parents had had any illnesses. The young man said that his mother had been very unhealthy when she was a child and that she had had problems with her health all her life. The manager asked if his father had been healthy. The young man answered that he had not been really healthy and that he had had heart problems.
The manager said that he was sorry to hear that and asked how old they had been when they died. The young man answered that they had been still very young: his mother had been thirty-five and his father had been forty. The manager sighed and said that he was sorry, but he couldn’t give him any life insurance.
When the man was leaving the office, another manager came up to him and said that he mustn’t be so honest with people. He smiled and advised him to use his imagination and make something up next time.
The young man went to another insurance company. The manager immediately asked if his parents had had any illnesses and how old they had been when they died. But this time the young man was ready with an answer. He said that his mother had been very keen on sports and that she had died when she was ninety because she had fallen off her bike. He also said that his father had been ninety-nine and had died while he was playing football because he had missed the ball and had been very upset about it.
The manager gave a big smile and said that they must give him some life insurance right away.
