1. Her father shares Mrs Jefferson’s point of view about friendship. We can understand this from the beginning of the conversation: Mrs Jefferson expects him to support her and says, “Just wait until your father gets home!”

2. Janet used to be friends with Kathy, but she stopped spending time with her when Ellie appeared. Janet and Ellie see each other every day at school and outside school, and they talk a lot. Ellie wants to play the leading part in the school play. Kathy is a quiet, well-mannered girl.

3. Mrs Jefferson thinks her daughter’s friends should be quiet and well-mannered, like Kathy. They shouldn’t be like Ellie.
