Упр.2a Урок 2 Юнит 6 New Millennium English 9 класс
2a. In pairs answer the questions alongside the text.
1. In sentence (A), the relative clause is essential to the meaning of the sentence. Without it, we do not know which man is being referred to. This is a defining relative clause.
2. In sentence (B), the relative clause is not essential to the meaning of the sentence. It gives additional information about Edstroem’s courage and self-discipline. The clause can be omitted, and the sentence will still make sense. This is a non-defining relative clause.
3. Commas are used to separate non-defining relative clauses from the rest of the sentence. That cannot be used instead of who or which in non-defining relative clauses.
4. Who is used for people, and which is used for things and animals.
5. The relative clauses expressing time and place are used as follows:
- when is used to refer to time in the sentence about Hans Roger Edstroem from Sweden;
- where is used to refer to a place: They took Edstroem to a hospital, where he was treated for dehydration.
