Part A

1. Rys was glad to come to America because he wanted to live and study there.
2. It was hard for him to use English because he had just arrived in a new country and did not know the language well enough.
3. Rys learned several books by heart because he wanted to improve his English and remember useful language patterns.

Part B

1. Rys dropped out of the course in English as a Second Language because he found it too easy and not useful for him.
2. Rys dropped out of the English course at a college because he wanted to study on his own and was not satisfied with the course.

Part C

Rys’s tutor stopped lessons because he thought Rys no longer needed them or because the lessons were not helping him enough.

Part D

Rys liked having the mirror, the wall and some other objects as his listeners because they helped him practise speaking English without being afraid of making mistakes.
