a) She is quite a bore.
b) He is quite well-built.

a) She has such big eyes.
b) Her eyes are so big.

a) He is rather a good speaker.
b) His speech was rather good.

After quite, such and rather, we use a/an before a singular countable noun in some structures:

• quite a + noun: She is quite a bore.
• such a + adjective + noun: He is such a good speaker.
• rather a + noun: He is rather a good speaker.

But we do not use a/an before adjectives alone:

• He is quite well-built.
• Her eyes are so big.
• His speech was rather good.
