- The present perfect is used because this is new information about a recent event.
- All these events happened in the past. The past perfect shows that Georgia plunged into the river before Sophie swam towards her. Then the events happened one after another, so the past simple is used: the girl clung to the dog, and the dog paddled to the bank with her.
- The past continuous is used for the long action was trying to reach, which was interrupted by the short actions slipped and plunged. The past simple is used in Sophie swam and saved because these actions happened one after another.
- We do not know when she was told not to do it, and the exact time is not important. That is why the present perfect is used.
