Pain in the name of fashion
Women have endured pain in the name of fashion for hundreds of years.
In the 19th century the most important item in a fashionable woman’s wardrobe was her corset. It allowed her to pull her body into the accepted shape of the day. Not everyone was lucky enough to have a tiny waist, so women pushed and pulled their flesh until their body was the right shape, then quickly tied their corsets into place — often causing fainting, deformity and long-term health problems — all in the name of fashion.
Everybody has probably owned at least one pair of uncomfortable shoes in their life. But for some fashion victims, walking in tight-fitting, painful footwear is a small price to pay for looking good. They don’t call stilettos ‘killer heels’ for nothing!
Doctors warn that wearing shoes with five, six or seven inch heels puts extreme pressure on the toes and can lead to bone deformities — not to mention the very real risk of falling over and spraining an ankle or breaking one of the bones in your foot. But this hasn’t stopped the rise of the super-high heel as worn by celebrities like Geri Halliwell or Kate Beckinsale. Author Stephanie Pedersen has written a book about shoes in which she claims that every year in Britain alone around 200,000 people need emergency hospital treatment as a result of shoe-related problems.
Another way that we suffer just to look good is when we go out in sub-zero temperatures wearing clothes designed for the tropics. Woolly jumpers and layers simply aren’t cool, but tiny tops and thigh-high miniskirts are! The same thing goes for rain. Raincoats just aren’t trendy and umbrellas are for losers. It’s better to get wet!
