1 Read the text. Name three things which you can see near Uffington.
The Mysterious White Horse
In our history class at school we’re doing a project about local history, so our teacher took us to visit a fascinating place near the village of Uffington about half an hour from Oxford. There, in a beautiful open space, is an amazing white horse which is ’drawn’ on the hillside.
Who created this White Horse, and why was it made? Well, historians say that an Iron Age tribe used to live there, and they created it as a sign of their territory. Certainly, the horse must be very old, because an almost identical figure appears on gold coins which were found in the area, and which date from the first century BC.
What fascinates me is how people were capable of creating such a perfect figure when they couldn’t see it from above! How could they see clearly what they were doing, when they didn’t have planes or even balloons? To make the White Horse, they had to dig large holes in the grass and then fill them with chalk — the soft white stone which is very common in this area.
If you go to this part of England, you must visit the White Horse. It’s an amazing place full of historical interest and mysterious stories. For example, legend says that Saint George killed the famous dragon near here, on Dragon Hill. There’s also an Iron Age hill fort nearby.

And finally, 30,000 people gathered at Stonehenge in Wiltshire last night to celebrate the summer solstice. The visitors stayed up all night, waiting to see the sun rise on the longest day of the year. Unfortunately it wasn’t a warm summer’s evening, and the party-goers had to wear waterproof clothing and huddle under a multitude of umbrellas. When the sun rose at 4:58 this morning, it was hardly visible behind all the clouds. But that didn’t stop people enjoying the festivities, and there was plenty of live music to keep people’s spirits up in the early hours.
Police said that the event was very peaceful, with only a few arrests for public order offences.
Meanwhile, English Heritage, which manages the prehistoric monument, said that this year had attracted the biggest crowd for five years, despite the bad weather. The public have had free access to Stonehenge for the summer solstice since the year 2000.

The advantages of tourism are that it helps the economy, develops transport and services, and makes people learn about other cultures. The disadvantages are traffic, litter, noise and damage to nature and historical places.
